Knight Notes August 16, 2017
Dear JPII Community,
What a great start we’ve had to the school year! As I walk the hallways and visit classrooms, the positive attitude of the students is apparent. We are getting into our rhythm and everything is operating more smoothly. Since the start of tutorials, the lunch flow has evened out. There is plenty of seating in the dining hall and we are monitoring the length of lunch lines to make sure students have ample time to attend tutorials, visit with friends, or attend a club/team meeting. We have noticed that morning drop off and afternoon pick up are moving along nicely – we appreciate your cooperation.
You should have received an email concerning our Solar Eclipse event on Monday. You can also access the information at Solar Eclipse 2017. We will keep you updated as necessary. The letter mentions an app that will be used to enhance our experience. The app can be found in the App Store by searching: Solar Eclipse Timer (purchase required).
As a top college preparatory school, we are focusing on ways we can provide academic counsel along with personal support. The Counseling Office will provide weekly updates of new programs and events to help parents navigate high school and college planning. The goal of the Counseling Office is to help students achieve positive personal, social, and academic results. In an effort to do this, they will host a school-wide Wellness Week August 28 – September 1. Each day will focus on a particular type of health and wellness topic (mental, physical, social, spiritual, environmental). The week is designed to educated students on the various resources available at JPII that help them engage in self-care and develop positive, healthy habits. The counselors will also host several programs this fall focusing on assisting students and parents with the college and post-secondary education process. Programs will include two College Application Saturdays* for senior students, an all-school College Fair with representation from over 150 colleges, grade level evening programs for parents, and one on college financial aid and scholarships. The counseling team invites you to reach out to them with any questions. Although our counselors are assigned to students through the House system, all are available to you at any time.
Ms. Wilson: House of Clement and House of Gregory
Ms. McIlroy: House of John and House of Leo
Mr. Brown: House of Pius and House of Peter
*The first College Application Day is this Saturday, August 19th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the library. Contact Mike Brown with questions.
We opened the admissions portal last week and we already have 61 applications for next year’s freshman class. We expect to fill the freshman class and much sooner than in the past several years. The growth of the area, coupled with the advantages JPII offers, is creating a new trend in admissions. If you have an eighth grader or know someone who has a student interested in JPII, please encourage them to apply now or schedule a Shadow Day. Additionally, we have amended our financial aid process and will accept 2016 tax returns along with 2017 W2s in an effort to speed up the financial aid process for families, new and returning. More information will be provided later in the fall.
Sincerely in Christ,
Michael A. Deely

ACT Primer Review, 8/26
Attention all those taking the ACT during first semester: JPII will be offering an ACT Primer Review from 8:30-11:15 a.m. on Saturday, August 26th on campus with Mrs. Peper and Mr. Connolly. Please note this is the ONLY Saturday ACT review for this semester that will be offered. The ACT test will be given on Sep 9, Oct 28, and Dec 9 this semester.
The Review is designed for those who are not taking the Conquering the ACT Innov8 class anytime this semester. The Review offers an overview of each of the four tests and the skills they assess, plus types of questions to expect, answer strategies, short practice sessions, and resources for further study and practice. It is especially designed for those taking the ACT for the first time or as needed for a follow-up review.
Most students typically take the ACT beginning in the junior year; JPII’s college counselors can help any family assess when it is best for their child. Students find the Review (and Innov8 class and summer camp) very helpful and feel they go into the test better able to do their best.
Advance registration for the August 26th Review is required by clicking HERE. The cost is $75, payable by cash or check payable to JPII. A minimum of 8 students must register for the Review to be held and the Review is capped at 30 students.
