Knight Notes

Dear JPII Community,

This week we have an exciting announcement about our Innov8 program to share with you! Recently we received a $290,000 donation from an anonymous donor. This donation is designated to fund the Investment and Entrepreneurial Innov8 classes. Students in these classes will use the gift to generate more capital through investments in the stock market, and the money made on the investments will be used to fund Innov8 service projects. Mr. Bob Page, AP Economics teacher, will lead these classes. Everyone is very excited about this new opportunity and all the doors it will open for our service initiatives. 

We will host our third football game on Friday against Briarcrest Christian School out of Memphis. This match will be the first game in our new division, so please come out and support the Knights.  

Many of our future Knights like to enjoy the lower fields and track during the football games. Please be aware that these areas will be closed Friday night for repairs.  

We have an update to the backpack policy concerning Mass, Assembly, and lunchtime. Students must place their backpacks in their lockers before Mass and Assembly; they are not to carry backpacks to classrooms or offices. During lunch, students may put their backpacks in the dining hall, but they can not take them inside the Pedestal serving area. Thank you, students, for your cooperation.

Garden Tools Needed

The Office of Campus Ministry is seeking gently used gardening tools. We are in the process of cleaning and tending to our beautiful Christocentric Prayer Garden in the front of the school, and we are in need of: hand trowels, hand rakes, shovels, rakes, and any other gardening items or tools the community would be willing to donate. Those interested in donating can contact Ms. Mills at emily.mills@jp2hs.org. Thank you for your support of our Campus Ministry program and our Prayer Garden!

ADMISSIONS

Admissions process open for 2019-2020 school year

The Admissions office is still accepting applications for 2019-2020. All current 8th graders and transfer students interested in pursuing admissions to JPII should begin the application process now. The first step is the online Pre-Application. Upon completion of the Pre-Application, a link to the Admissions Portal will populate on the last page which will take you to the Admissions Portal. A Checklist of items will be listed that will need to be completed for admission consideration. Please contact the Admissions Ooce with any questions, 615-590-6014.

FFE Kick-off Results
Thank you to all who came out in support of our Fund for Excellence Kick-off House Competition on 8/23!!  The House of Peter had the most parent signatures and is the winner of the FFE House Points.  Many thanks to our House FFE Chairs, it was a fun evening!

Alumni Homecoming Tailgate, 9/27

JPII Alumni are invited to attend the upcoming HOMECOMING football game on Friday, September 27th. The football tailgate will open at 5:00 p.m. and kick-off begins at 7:00 p.m. sharp! Stop by the ALUMNI TENT located outside of the front entry gate of the Jim Carell Athletic Compex to receive free admission and a commemorative alumni gift.

Alumni Homecoming Event, 9/27

At half-time, join fellow alumni, alumni parents and families, and the JPII faculty/staff in the Knights Athletic Room (at the base of the football field) for a reception with food and beverages. Liturgical Schedule

Morning Mass is offered at 7:00 am on Monday and 7:15 am on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. Confessions are available after school during the Vespers block and by appointment via fr.forsythe@jp2hs.org. Please visit the Liturgical Schedule for more details. 

 

CHRISTIAN SERVICE

NEW Service Hour Requirements for 2019-2020
Our Service program continues to evolve over time and next year we are requiring students to serve a minimum of five hours in a pre-approved non-profit organization. The requirements are summarized below:

 

  1. Five hours of every year’s service requirement must be completed at a pre-approved non-profit that ideally aligns with the service theme of the student’s grade level.
  2. All other hours must be completed at a pre-approved non-profit organization, church, or in service to Pope John Paul II High School (outside of the regular school day).
  3. To guarantee that hours will be approved, students with questions about service must speak to the Service Coordinator before undertaking the service.

Room in the Inn at St. Joseph’s is in need of innkeepers to stay overnight with guests on Sunday evenings. Interested young men and their fathers are able to stay overnight with the guests to earn 12 service hours. The volunteer shift is wrapped up by 6:30 Monday morning. We provide beds. We also need help with bed set up and serving dinner on Sunday afternoon from 4:00-7:00. Interested students should contact Hillary Combs at 615-310-4219.

College Fair, 9/12
college fair for students on Thursday, September 12th from 9:10-10:30 a.m. in the main gym.  Every student will have the opportunity to interact with admission representatives from over 110 colleges. Please don’t hesitate to contact a member of the school counseling department with questions.

GREATER COMMUNITY

NCBWL Luncheon, 9/13
JPII moms, students, grandparents and friends are invited to the Nashville Catholic Business Women’s League Pearls of Wisdom Luncheon, Fashion Show and Auction on Sept. 14 at 10:30 a.m. at Richland Country Club. The event is held each year to raise funds to fund three scholarships each year, one to a girl at each of the three Catholic Schools in Nashville: JPII, Father Ryan and St. Cecilia Academy. Tickets are $50 per person and table sponsorships are available. ICC 23rd Annual International Festival, 9/15

Immaculate Conception Church’s 23rd Annual International Festival will be Sunday, September 15th, beginning with the International Festival Mass at 11am. This family-friendly event celebrates countries around the world, many of which are represented by members of our community, and features food from a variety of countries/cultures and free entertainment. In addition, there will be a craft fair, beer tent, silent auction, flea market and the popular Kids’ Zone with inflatables & face painting.
