Knight Notes September 13, 2018

Dear JPII Community,

This is Homecoming Week and we are celebrating the week with daily dress down themes and House competitions. We will wrap up our school day pre-game activities with a pep rally after lunch on Friday.

I invite everyone to come out on Friday night for Homecoming festivities and Community Knight. Tailgate row opens at 5:00 p.m., the Knight Walk is at 6:05 p.m., and kick off against Baylor is at 7:00 p.m. The Knights of Columbus will be cooking hotdogs and will hand them out for free. At halftime, our Homecoming Court will be presented and the Homecoming Queen will be crowned.

We look forward to welcoming our alumni and their families back on campus for the big game. There will be a reception in the KAC room for our alumni guests and a post game gathering at The Rudder, hosted by Director of Alumni Relations, Ms. Mary Leonard.

The Homecoming Dance is Saturday from 8:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. in the dining hall. We strive to make this a fun and safe evening. We encourage our students to make smart decisions, as the temptation to drink is all too present in today’s society. As we have done in the past, the students are subject to a Breathalyzer test upon arrival. Our administrators, security officer, and officers of the Hendersonville Police Department will be on campus as added security. We ask parents to chaperone any after parties and support the administration by keeping parties alcohol free. Our partnership with parents over the past few years has helped keep this weekend special and we need your continued teamwork to remain successful.

In addition to a week of Homecoming celebration, we have hosted hundreds of parochial school students for a school visit day. It is great to see their excitement as they tour the school and interact with our teachers and students. They can’t wait to be Knights! My gratitude to the admissions team, faculty, staff, and bus drivers for their support in ensuring our future Knights have a great experience. With admissions applications coming in daily, we will have a full freshman class, so I encourage you to apply right away and share the application link with anyone who might be considering JPII as an option for his or her freshman.

Our campus is always buzzing with activity and this weekend is no exception. JPII will host its annual Model UN Conference on Saturday. Mr. Saboe and our Model UN Team will welcome 18 schools from around Tennessee and other states. We have one of the top programs in the country. Hosting our own conference provides a great opportunity for our students to interact with other students and teachers around the region and the collaboration helps support the development of our program in partnership with Catholic, private, and public schools.

Congratulations to our Women’s Soccer team for their huge win over St. Cecilia on Senior Night, 7-0. Our Volleyball team picked up a region win against Brentwood Academy earlier this week and tonight they travel to Fr. Ryan. I hope many of you can make it to the game to show your support.

We have a very special opportunity and one that we are hopeful so many of our students, alumni, current and alumni parents and your relatives and friends will want to join in helping. We are assisting a very special family build their Habitat for Humanity dream home. 

We need your help on Saturday. September 22 and Sunday, September 23 to do the interior work on this home.

Taste and See, 9/19

The Admissions Office will host a Taste and See on 9/19 at 10:45 a.m. Visitors will have lunch with Headmaster Mike Deely, administrative staff, department chairs, and coaches. Admissions process open for 2019-2020 school year

The Admissions Office opens Admissions Portal for 2018-2019. All current 8th graders and transfer tstudents interested in pursuing admissions to JPII should begin the application process now. The first step is the online Pre-Application. Upon completion of the Pre-Application, a link to the Admissions Portal will populate on the last page which will take you to the Admissions Portal. A Checklist of items will be listed that will need to be completed for admission consideration. Please contact the Admissions Office with any questions, 615-590-6014. 



Letterman Jackets and Letter Sweaters ORDER 9/19

Letterman Jackets and Letter Sweaters can be ordered from American Spirit Wear until Thursday, October 4th. Mr. Ebelhar will be on campus for sizing and taking orders on Tuesday, September 18th during lunch. Order forms with deposit must be turned in to Coach Sneed by October 4th. Men’s Basketball Trouts for freshmen and transfer students, 10/29

PGC Shooting College for basketball, 9/22-9/23

We’re excited to announce that PGC Shooting College for basketball players is coming to Pope John Paul II High School on Sept. 22-23! 


·         9/22 – 2:00 to 8:00

·         9/23 – 10:00 to 4:00

During this weekend camp, players discover a shooter’s mindset, develop sound shooting techniques, and build a training plan to become a deadly shooter. Players will also benefit from learning the specific shots all great scorers need in their toolbox.

Service Requirements for 2018-2019 School Year

Freshmen are required to complete 15 hours of service; sophomores are required to complete 20 hours of service, and juniors/seniors are required to complete 25 hours of service. All hours must be logged and verified through x2VOL.

All hours must fall into one the following categories:

1) Non-profit organizations (recommended type of service)

2) Church Service (Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Food Pantry, etc.)

3) School Service (must be supervised by a faculty member and pre-approved by Ms. Bologa)

All hours completed over the summer must be submitted, verified, and approved before the end of the 1st quarter on Friday, October 5th.


Habitat for Humanity Build, 9/22-9/23

JPII is helping to sponsor a Habitat for Humanity build on September 22nd and 23rd! Volunteers are needed each day to help complete the house for a family in need. Please email Ms. Bologa (maddie.bologa@jp2hs.org) to reserve a spot. Volunteers are needed from 7:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and each volunteer must commit to a full day of work. This is an excellent group service opportunity that is open to any student who is 16 or older. Parent volunteers are welcome as well!


OLOL Moms PLUS needs volunteers, 9/16-9/18 and 9/22

The Moms PLUS ministry at Our Lady of the Lake is in need of volunteers to help with their seasonal consignment sale.  Help is needed during the following times: Sunday, 9/16: 12:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m., Monday, 9/17: 6 p.m.-9 p.m.,Tuesday, 9/18: 6 p.m.-9 p.m., and Saturday, 9/22: 8:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.-3:00 p.m. Please email ololconsignment@gmail.com or call Jennifer at 615-417-2234 with questions or if you would like to help.



JPII Model United Nations Conference

Those participating in the 7th Annual Pope John Paul II High School Model UN (JPIIMUN) Conference this Saturday, September 15th, should arrive by 8:45 am and enter the school via the Chapel Doors entrance wearing business and with research in hand.  We will conclude the conference by 3:00 pm.  Interested parents and students can contact Mr. Paul Saboe at paul.saboe@jp2hs.org to have questions answered and to register up until the morning of the conference. 


Caldwell Classic 5K, 11/10

JPII will be hosting our annual charity 5K, the Caldwell Classic, benefitting the Jason Foundation, a non-profit whose mission is to prevent teen suicide through educational and awareness programs. More information about registering for the race will be forthcoming, but right now, we are seeking sponsors to insure that all of the money raised at the 5K will be donated to this worthy charity. The cost of sponsorship is $250, which includes placing your company logo on the race t-shirt and the opportunity to advertise at the event at 9:00 a.m. on November 10th.  Interested sponsors should email Andrew Griffith (andrew.griffith@jp2hs.org). We hope to see you all on November 10th for this JPII tradition, which has raised more than $40,000 for charity since Veronica del Valle started this wonderful event.


Teen Read, 10/3

The first Teen Read book is “The Hate U Give”, by Angie Thomas.  This book will be discussed with this month’s guest teacher, Ms. Walsh, on October 3rd during lunch.  You can borrow it from your local library, buy an iBook copy for your iPad, or borrow the JPII copy.  Parents are invited to join their student in reading and discussing Teen Read books – the parent/student duo who participates in the most books will win a prize!  For more information on Teen Read, talk with Mrs. Terrill or visit the Teen Read website here: https://goo.gl/RRiyi5


Yearbook News

  • The 2017-18 Yearbook (last school year) is set for delivery at the end of next week.
  • There are limited extra copies available.  If you did not order a yearbook last year, please send a check for $100 (payable to JPII) to Mrs. Smith, ASAP.
  • Get a head start – get a discount!  The 2018-19 Excalibur is now on SALE.  Please see the flyer for ordering information.  Contact Mrs. Smith (jennifer.smith@jp2hs.org) if you have yearbook questions, including information on ordering yearbooks or sponsoring the journalism program with a business ad.

Ninth and Tenth Grade Parent College Night Program 9 /12/18 

The counseling office will host a Ninth and Tenth Parent College Night Program on Wednesday, September 12th from 6:30 – 7:30pm in the Library.

The program will include valuable information for ninth and tenth grade parents on the college search and application timeline.  Please don’t hesitate to contact a member of the school counseling department with questions.  We hope all ninth and tenth grade parents can attend!  

JPII College Fair 9/20/18

JPII will host an all-school college fair on Thursday, September 20th from 9 – 10:30 am in the main gym.  Every student will have the opportunity to interact with admission representatives from over 120 colleges. Please don’t hesitate to contact a member of the school counseling department with questions.

Ecuador Immersion Applications Available Friday!

This language and cultural immersion will take place over the course of two weeks in Quito, Ecuador, and will give students of any Spanish level the opportunity to improve their fluency. Afternoon Spanish study will be complimented by morning and evening activities including: sampling traditional Ecuadorian foods, touring Quito’s historic district, shopping in traditional indigenous markets, hiking local mountains, visiting an Ecuadorian high school, salsa and merengue dance lessons, and more. Students will live in a homestay with warm, hospitable, and experienced Ecuadorian families, providing the student a daily opportunity to practice their Spanish and to see everyday life in this exciting South American country. Students will also travel to Mindo, a peaceful town known for its beautiful natural landscape and biodiversity, where they will hike to a gorgeous waterfall, tube down a mountain river, visit a small-business owner’s chocolate factory, and learn about the changing environmental conditions in Ecuador.

  • Approximate Dates: Tuesday, May 28 – Tuesday, June 11 (contingent on best airfare deals)
  • Approximate Cost: $2500 – $2800 (assuming 12 students; cost may be slightly higher or lower based on airfare)
  • Open to students in the classes of ’20, ’21, ’22.
  • Cost Includes:
  • 4 hours of 1-1 daily language instruction with a skilled native teacher (40 hours total)
  • Airfare and all other transportation within Ecuador
  • All Food and Housing
  • All Activities (dance lessons, cooking cuey, hiking, Teleferico [gondola], tubing, museum visits, historical church tours, and more)

The Moss-Marymount Open Scholarship Scramble Golf Tournament, 10/19

Each summer, many children whose families could not otherwise afford camp tuition are able to attend Camp Marymount thanks to scholarship assistance. Your participation in the tournament will ensure that children in need will continue to experience Camp Marymount.
