JPII Students Earn Record 95 AP Scholar Awards
Hendersonville, TN July, 10, 2013 – In May, 238 Pope John Paul II High School students took 538 Advanced Placement exams and earned 95 AP Scholar Awards. All three numbers represent school records.
Karen Phillips, Assistant Head of School and Dean of Studies remarked, “At JPII, we believe that the purpose of the academic program is to convey optimism in students’ abilities to grow and develop intellectually. Our approach to the AP program reveals this optimism as we practice a liberal enrollment policy for access to AP courses. This practice results in a large percentage of our student body both taking and passing AP courses and confirms that we are able to provide instructional experiences that produce independent, discerning thinkers who are well prepared for the rigors of college.”
The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program® provides students the opportunity to earn college credit in high school upon successful completion of a rigorous course and AP exam, and it recognizes several levels of achievement based on students’ performance on AP Exams.
- Five JPII students received the National AP Scholar Award by earning an average score of 4 or higher on a five-point scale on all AP exams taken, and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.
- Twenty seven JPII students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.
- Twenty two JPII students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.
- Forty one JPII students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Exams with scores of 3 or higher.
