“It must be remembered that the purpose of education is not to fill the minds of students with facts… it is to teach them to think, if that is possible, and always to think for themselves.” – Robert Hutchins
Mrs. Newby’s chemistry course is designed to introduce the students to the fundamentals of chemistry including the structure of matter, energy transformations during chemical processes, the periodic table, chemical bonding, stoichiometry, properties of gases and fundamental chemical reactions. The laboratory component of the course exposes the student to basic chemical techniques as well as hands-on experiences with the topics covered in class. The class will be taught using the “modeling” pedagogy; a revolutionary teaching technique focusing on inquiry, pictorial and graphical representations of chemical processes, Socratic questioning, and student-led discussions. All advanced chemistry students will complete an independent experimental research project during the second semester of the course along with learning about solution chemistry and acid-base chemistry.
